Professional Canon L Glass from MJ Lens Rental

Need to take a quick moment to once again mention my boy Matt Carr of MJ Lens Rental, www.mjlensrental.com.  It’s amazing to have a complete line of Canon L glass at your finger tips.  Matt is a super great guy and is willing to go above and beyond to get you the stuff you need to get your gig done.  He also stocks a Canon 50D, Speedlites and much more.  When I say much more I mean an EF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM!  Check him out if you’re a Canon shooter!

1978 Canon A-1 with 50mm f/1.4 for Sale

September 25th, 2009

So, I’ve finally given up on the fact that I’ll ever shoot with my film camera again… :-( I’ve really been beating myself up over this. This camera and I have been through a lot together. If it weren’t for it’s stubborn full manual attitude I wouldn’t be the photographer I am today. I learned the tricks of the trade with this camera. No screen to check your lighting and focus. You HAVE to know what you’re doing with a camera to capture good images with this bad boy. That’s the beautiful part. It forces you to learn your craft. I’m selling the camera and lens for $200. If anyone is interested lemme know. justin@justincaryphotography.com or 316.304.4599.

The Older I Get…

September 24th, 2009

A couple days ago I was working at the kitchen table when a name caught my attention on the news, Jared Hobaugh.  Jared was killed in a plane crash on the 22nd.  Anyone who went to Maize or Valley Center… well, any high school between 1996 and 2000 knew and probably attended a few Shaft gigs.  Few people know this but I wanted to play an instrument and start a band because of Shaft.  I really looked up to those guys… let’s face it, they were bad ass!  Jared was the lead singer and an all around great guy.  I didn’t meet him until the Shaft days were over.  Jared ran sound for our band on numerous occasions and I remember one show in particular, in the middle of a field south of Newton.  He brought all of his gear out, set it up and provided some killer sound for 5 bands and at least a couple thousand people.  We were rock stars that night, thanks to him!  When the night was over he walked up to me and wanted me to know how good our band sounded.  That meant the world to me.  Jared Hobaugh, the same guy that pushed me to be a musician… crazy what effect people can have on a kid and never even know it.  Wish I wasn’t so stubborn and would have let him know that himself.

The Hobaugh family is in our prayers.  I saw the newscast tonight and Jared was supposed to walk his sister down the isle…  That’s when it hit me.  He’s gone.  You won’t be forgotten my friend.

A little tribute to Shaft.

Jesse + Ashleigh Marks

September 7th, 2009

Ahh, 3:30am - to 1:00am.  My sister and I woke up early to drive out to Parsons, KS for a BEAUTIFUL wedding.  Last December I had the pleasure of shooting Ashleigh’s (twin) sister Megan’s wedding in Lawrence so it was awesome to see a lot of the same friendly faces.  Ashleigh’s mother even greeted me with a Diet Mountain Dew in the morning… totally impressed and blown away that she even remembered!!!

The wedding was gorgeous.  Here are just a few of the photos we captured.  I’ll be posting many more on my website this week.  As always… ENJOY!!!

Canon 7D

September 1st, 2009

This should definitely catch the eye of the HD DSLR world!  I own the 5D Mark II and it shoots beautiful images and killer HD video.  The only thing I’m a little perturbed about is it’s lack of frame options.  The new 7D shoots in 30p, 24p and 25p @ 1080p.  Not too shabby!  I’ll no doubt find a way to get my hands on one of these.  Oh, and did I mention it has an 18MP sensor and shoots up to 8fps.  NICE!  Anyway, check it out here.

Catalog Image with Setup

August 26th, 2009

Today I’m finishing some insert shots for a catalog I’ve been working on for the last month.  Yes, a month is a long time, but I painted, photographed, clipped the images and designed the entire catalog.  Lots of fun but lots of work.  So today I’m shooting the final images for the pages we’ve left blank intentionally for “live” photos.  This is the setup shot and the actual image that is going in the catalog.  Any questions?  Shoot me a comment.

Amazing…

Been a long while!

July 14th, 2009

Man, it’s been a bit since I’ve posted any type of blog!  I have an excuse though…  Kayla and I had our second son on May 27th and if you’ve had the joy of a newborn around the house you know you get NOTHING done.  Now that Kade is 6 weeks Kayla and I had our first big night out.  Here’s a preview of what we did.  By the way, all of these images (for the techy peeps) were shot with a point and shoot Canon SD1000, street price, $180 (two years ago)!  I would love to bring my camera into a high profile concert like this but if they said no I couldn’t see myself leaving it in the parking lot with the three guards on duty. By the way, even if you’re not a country music fan, Keith Urban puts on one helluva show!!!

Flickr & Vimeo

June 5th, 2009

I’ve decided to go back to Flickr… why?  It seems like a good idea to get more of my images out there.  It’s so difficult to sift through images to put on the website.  I need to do a flush and fill with new images but I have to find the time for that.  In the meantime you’ll see links at the bottom left hand corner of my site that will lead you to my social networking sites.  I’ve also put a Vimeo link to share my videos.  I hope to have photography tutorial videos soon… just need to find someone to shoot them!

Enjoy!!!

Shave to Save - Amy Sorensen

May 24th, 2009

So, a friend of Jess and Andy’s, Amy Sorensen, shaved her head for the American Cancer Society. Now, all of you ladies need to sit back for a second and reflect. . . Sink in? I thought Amy was nuts when she called me and told me she wanted to do a before and after shoot of her chopping her doo. I first thought of my wife… her hair is the most precious thing in her “attached to her body” world!!! And Amy was going to just shave hers off. Brave Woman! She raised $8,300 and… there it went, to the floor, well, actually to Locks of Love but you get it. So here are some awesome photos we took. I had a blast! Thanks for being so courageous Amy! I’m sure I speak for millions when I say, YOUR CRAZY!!! But the ACS and the world, is better off because of people like you.
