So… I’m seriously thinking about offering Black and White Hand Processing. What does this mean? The absolute best black and white films are NOT your every day run of the mill C41 process, they are a true B&W process.

The beauty of hand processing is the versatility. If you need to push your film it won’t cost you any more money. I want to set the prices flat. I want you to shoot B&W film. You NEED to shoot film!

Anyway, here’s the skinny:

Black and White (Processing Only)
135 (35mm) – $4.00
120 – $4.50
220 – $5.00
4×5 – $1/sheet

I’m working on getting my scanning gear up to snuff. I have a killer scanner (Epson V750). I can scan up to 8×10 Negative. I just need to buy some odds and ends and I’ll be offering scanning as well. Until then, I’ll process your film, put it in a nice protective sleeve and let you deal with the digi conversion.

There are a couple places in Wichita, KS that will ALWAYS have Black and White film in stock:

1.) Lawrence Photo
2.) Moler’s Camera
3.) Justin Cary Photography (I buy in bulk and load my own carts. I will gladly sell them if you promise to return my cartridges!)

Also, if you’d like to chemically/optically enlarge your negatives you can do so at Douglas Photographic Inc. They have a legit darkroom… and even more legit is their print dryer :) Seriously I need to get one of those dryers!

Here’s a roll of TMAX400 I processed tonight:

About 8 months ago we had the opportunity to pick up a Super 16 camera package we couldn’t pass up. Since then we’ve been shooting like crazy on it and we plan on adding it to the fleet of film cameras that travels with us to shoot weddings.

As far as commercial work goes, we’ve been loving the results we’re getting. Here’s the earliest test we shot with the Arri SRII. This clip was telecined (the process of digitizing the film negative to edit in a digital workflow) on an older style machine.

Here is the most recent commercial we shot and delivered for GoRun Wichita. This piece was transferred on a newer style scanner and has a beautiful sharpness while still maintaining the softness and beauty of film.

We can’t wait to hit our stride with the Super 8 and Super 16 Wedding films. It truly is a one of a kind style film that you’ll treasure forever.

On the other hand, if you’re a business in need of a branding, lifestyle commercial we’d be glad to sit down and have a chat!

So after a massive hiatus I’m back! Well, more like, “we’re” back. There’s been some restructuring and soul searching around Justin Cary Photography. A new year is coming up and we’re starting over completely. We had decided to change our name and start from scratch but quickly scratched that idea. So, instead, we’re offering more.

Some of you may know that Justin is a Director of Photography… This typically refers to the Motion Picture industry and that’s where he’s been… shooting moving images, not stills. Justin has a deep passion for film, both still images and moving images. We’ve finally figured out our main purpose and that’s to capture lasting imagery that will live on for your great grandkids to enjoy. Yes, that’s creepy to think, you’re all going to be really old someday :( That is, if 2012 doesn’t take us all… Just Kidding.

So here it is. We are now booking Wedding and Portrait Sessions. That much has been true throughout the years. What we’re offering now, that we didn’t before, is the MOTION picture services. We don’t capture stale stagnant imagery in our still work so don’t expect us to do it for your moving images either.

What’s so unique about offering video services you ask??? Well let us tell you.

You may receive your wedding as a finished video, but it DOES NOT start there. Justin specializes in shooting film… Real celluloid film. If you’ve had the pleasure of seeing your parents in motion as youngsters then you probably know what we’re talking about. Super 8 film… Little tiny frames that capture your special day in a way video cannot touch. There’s something about film, small gauges especially, that captures life in a way that has that nostalgic look and feel. It’s classic and will last forever. Don’t get stuck with a team of 4 videographers dressed in black, wearing headsets capturing your day like a high school football game! Give it some style. Here’s an example of modern Super 8.

Please give us a call at 316.304.4599 or shoot us an Email.

Hope to work with you someday soon!

For those of you who know us personally… my wife and I that is, you know all about Kade. Kade, or Tato, is our second son. He was born May 27, 2009 and with him came all new challenges to our life. Jace, our first son, was an easy kid… sure he had his episodes from time to time but all in all he was a great baby. Tato on the other hand was AWFUL!!!! He wouldn’t sleep, poop, eat, etc… But for some odd reason at about 13/14 months he just snapped. This kid is hilarious and the punchline to most of our stories. It’s amazing what a little love and devotion will bring you :) Anyway, Tato and I had our first real studio photo shoot. Yes, he’s pretty old for it to be our first but, like I said, he was awful.

I have a number of blog posts that I’m going to tackle in the next 25 years… here’s the first I need to get off of my chest.

So, it’s come to my attention that a “Reel” is the way creative individuals display (show off) their work. What’s in a Reel? Well, I’ll tell you. It’s supposed to be a number of works you are most proud of. Work you’ve worked hard to create as and artist. I’m proud of a number of things I’ve done in the past 5 years but I’ve been reluctant to build a reel. Here’s my beef……..

I’ve been viewing reels and I know for a fact that the material on some of the reels are, in fact, not that particular persons work. Well, maybe, in a tiny, non creative way. All I’m saying is…

If you’re going to add something to your reel as a creative you better have had a part of the “CREATIVE” – “ARTISTIC” side of what makes up the work. If you’re a Director, list it… If you’re a UPM, list it… If you’re head of Craft Services, list it.

Be true to yourself because the people that hire you to do the work will expect the work they see on your reel. If someone else is responsible for the creative aspect of the project be sure to let your clients know that. You don’t need to name names, just let them know that that’s not your camera work or editing work or writing work… You get it.

So that, is, in fact, why I haven’t posted a reel. But will soon. And you better bet I’ll list my part in every project. I love you all… especially the creatives!!!! Keep up the great work and wade through the muck that makes up the internet!!!!

We shot the music video on a very strict budget in a short amount of time. If you have any questions about the video, please please ask away! It’s late… I’m tired. Enjoy!!!

I have been challenging myself to help others my whole life. I hope that’s come across every now again. I know a couple of people that are so crazy protective about what they know if drives me nuts!!! Let go of that knowledge, help others, you can’t take it with you when you DIE!!! So, with that being said. I’m starting a photography school. A real one, with books, well, hand outs and stuff.

I want to pass on my knowledge of photography with you! This is where is begins. It will no doubt be one of the best in town as I have an EXCELLENT team of people working with me but it will also be affordable.

I’ll keep you posted. Please contact me if you are interested. I’m scheduling dates to be held in Wichita and have a fairly full class as it is. I want to be able to have one on one time with each of you so I’ll be keeping the class under 10 students.

A blog post with NO images… WHAT!!!!! Are you crazy?

Yes. I’ve been crazy for the last 27 years of my life. I’m here to ask for your help. Obviously I get traffic on my blog. There are ways for website owners to see this. I hardly get any response and that’s not what I want. Not on my blog silly… In the world around you. Some of you, most of you, that read this blog are very close to me. I need your help to grow my business. It’s plain to see that I shoot weddings, portraits, commercial, blah blah blah. Without my friends and family spreading the word of my work I’m nothing! You’ve all done a great job this far and I can’t thank you enough for your support… especially my pops!

The time has come. I am officially going to be in the phone book… Scary, never know what you’re gonna get from the Yellow Pages. I’m looking into 360wichita.com and will soon be up and running with them. I’m not sure what other kinds of marketing efforts to pursue. That’s where word of mouth comes in.

I’ve decided to take my talent mainstream. So bring on the phone calls and the business. I have 4 mouths to feed… and mine is last on the totem pole… even under the dog :-) – OK, so, 5 mouths to feed.

God has blessed me with a gift… Yes, my eye, but all of you as well.

Here’s to many drinks with all of you!!! Hopefully all on me! Cheers!

Film school seems like 100 years ago… but every shoot I pull another trick out of the FS bag of tricks. This is a standard way of controlling on location lighting when your shooting tungsten indoors.

I was recently hired by a home remodeling company to take high end professional photos of their amazing work. It dawned on me that I will be taking photos of kitchens, bathrooms, living rooms and so on. Rooms that seem big when you’re hanging out become very very small when your photographing them… FACT!

Here’s one trick I used to control my color temperature. I was shooting at a WB of 3200K. The light coming in from the windows was, I’m guessing, about a 5200K cool temp. I grabbed some 1/2 CTO and covered the visible and non visible windows that would be casting light into the room. What does this do? CTO is a filter/gel that corrects daylight to tungsten. When you are shooting indoors the color temperature of the lighting inside is much warmer than the sunlight outdoors. This is how you correct that to get nice consistent warm tones throughout your photos. Here are some examples.

Please email me if you have any questions. I’d love to help you out!!!
